Cheese on Toast
I went to a maker’s market the other day in our village. You know the kind of thing.
- Cookies
- Trinkets
- Homemade cakes
- Juices
- Jewellery
- Cheeses
Half of it is crap, half they’ve made a decent effort. Anyway, there are a few food stalls there. And there’s this one stall I see all the time at these things.
He JUST sells cheese on toast.
Nothing else, just cheese on toast. You have three options.
- Cheese
- Cheese and ham
- Cheese and tomato
That’s it. And the line is always HUGE. Other food stalls have some customers, but this guy kills it.
Why?
Is it because cheese on toast is tastier than anything else? It’s nice enough, right? But better than everything else, probably not.
I think it’s a few things:
- He only does cheese on toast so he is really really good at it. He’s found the perfect bread thickness and the right type of cheese.
- The choice is simple. There’s no mixing or matching, a bit of this and a bit of that.
So what can we learn from Mr Cheese on Toast?
#1 Become a specialist
What he doesn’t know about cheese on toast isn’t worth knowing, which is why he’s so good at it. You should become an expert in one small area of the market. The open? Close? Pre-market?
#2 The choices are simple. 3 options, that’s it.
Humans like simple clear choices, we get decision fatigue otherwise. Just like during the trading day, long, short, fade, follow, scale, add, etc.
Too many decisions to make… A few simple easy decisions are way better for us.
