Lessons from a Trader's Coach

Essential trading lessons

I came across this interview on YouTube between a trader, Lance Brietstein, and a high-performance coach Dr. Jonathan Katz.

What I found interesting was a trader interviewing their coach…

Lance is using the lessons and experience in their relationship to help other traders understand the ingredients needed to be successful.

They reflected on Lance’s experience coming up the ranks at Trillium and what he had that benefited him so much to outperform the rest and escape the close call of getting fired.

Some key points that I found quite interesting were…

#1 Over-identifying with losing trades

Seeing the loss as a result of self-worth and not as an error made out of inexperience or even just bad luck.

#2 Openness to learning

Seeing losing trades as a valuable source of learning and continuing to work hard even when things are going well.

#3 Comparison to others

When things aren’t going well and there isn’t much self-esteem, people are quick to compare themselves to others.

#4 Relationship to money runs deep

How money was viewed growing up can influence how you make trading decisions today.

#5 Burnout

There is an infinite amount of work to do in this job, rest and sleep play huge roles in staying alert and effective.

#6 Personal relationships

The quality of our relationships plays a major role in trading performance.

#7 Contentment

A general sense of feeling content in your life takes the pressure off of trading results to find happiness.

Which one of these could YOU work on?
