The Stoics Would Crush the Markets
Applying Stoic Virtues to Modern Trading
I can’t help but think the Stoics would’ve been awesome traders.
I can just see it now…
- Epictetus smashing the DOW.
- Aurelius rinsing the DAX.
- Seneca dominating Crude Oil.
Am I right?!
But, sadly, times were a lot tougher back then… which is probably why Stoicism was so necessary.
Sh1t was rough.
Fast forward to today, and many of the Stoics’ principles and virtues still apply, especially to trading…
STOIC VIRTUES
The Stoics believed in four key virtues:
1️⃣ Wisdom
The ability to make sound judgments, think rationally, and act based on knowledge and understanding.
2️⃣ Courage
The strength to face challenges, endure adversity, and take action even when it’s difficult.
3️⃣ Justice
Acting fairly, ethically, and with integrity, treating others with respect.
4️⃣ Temperance
Practicing self-control, moderation, and restraint, avoiding excess or overindulgence.
The parallels to trading are obvious, right?
I believe a great trader embodies these virtues not just in the markets but in life.
Improving bit by bit as a person often brings the added bonus of becoming a better trader… and vice versa.
Something to ponder…
