Timeless Tips from Marty Schwartz,
The Pitbull
Why Marty Schwartz’s Lessons Remain Valuable Today
“A plan?” I said. “I get up, I go to work, I come home. I hope I have enough energy left to get laid, and I go to bed. That’s my plan.”
That’s Marty Schwartz, aka “Pitbull,” when his wife asked if he had a trading plan.
Spoiler alert: He eventually got one… and went on to make millions.
PITBULL
Marty Schwartz didn’t really hit my radar until someone recommended his book, Pitbull.
I’d read Market Wizards years before, but was probably too new to the game to appreciate the wisdom…
You see Marty was a real hero to many traders
- A discretionary trader
- Struggled (and conquered) his discipline
- Trading the S&P in size
- Swashbuckling his way to a fortune
One man, a brokerage account, and a determination to make it.
And he did…
TRADING LESSONS
I always recommend his book to any trader. (It’s one of my top 5)
I still pick it up from time to time, revisiting chapters to refresh some of his timeless principles. It’s well worth a read.
To get you in the mood, here are some of his best quotes:
“I measure my success by how disciplined I’ve become, not by the profits I make.”
“Trading gives you an incredible high, but it also brings you down to the depths of despair.”
“I know where I’m getting out before I get in. The point is, you need to know your exit strategy before you enter the market.”
“When you’re trading at your best, it’s like playing in the zone. Everything flows, and you can anticipate the next move effortlessly.”
“Being a successful trader means understanding your own psychological weaknesses and compensating for them in your strategy.”
And finally
“Dare to dream. It’s not where you are, it’s where you’re going that counts.”
Love it.
